DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Marketing and Communications Department is responsible for establishing the brand and brand promise for Benson Hill as well as managing internal and external stakeholder engagement and communications in alignment with that. The communication team leads the communication of the company's vision, mission and community engagement through traditional and digital communications, media relations, events, and internal and stakeholder engagement. The marketing team works in collaboration with the Operations team and the Strategy and Business Development team to develop and refine marketing goals, strategies, and tactics that bring our products and platform to life.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Sr. Director of Public Relations & Events has responsibility for driving external and internal communications and event planning to position the company for near and long-term growth. This position will report to the Chief of Staff. This position will have extensive interaction with a cross functional set of internal departments and outside customers and will represent the company.

ADVANCING THE PURPOSE AND BUSINESS: The Sr. Director activates the vision and values of the organization by connecting vision, purpose, values, and strategy to express the company's character in a story that will resonate with its customers and key stakeholders. The Sr. Director will lead corporate communications and events to establish consistent and compelling positioning that conveys the company near-term and long-term value proposition and generates business opportunity and investor support. The Sr. Director will develop an integrated strategic communications plan that raises awareness and generates customer and stakeholder interest using multiple channels, including print and digital media, conferences, awards, etc.

ENGAGING AND EMPOWERING EMPLOYEES: Employees bring corporate values to life through every interaction they have with stakeholders and each other. The Sr. Director will collaborate closely with Human Resources and ensure employees are informed and understand the company's vision and goals and are speaking with one voice. The Sr. Director will collaborate with human resources to recruit and retain top talent throughout the organization.

YOU WILL (ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES):

Create a public relations strategy that will allow Benson Hill leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.

Drive communications via earned and owned media, proactively build relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and position subject matter with the media to achieve high impact.

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to craft content for use across multiple channels, including press releases, talking points and presentations.

Develop a strategy to leverage awards and conference opportunities, prepare senior leadership for participation in external events including briefing papers, talking points, marketing materials etc.

Serve as a company spokesperson and provide communications training to Benson Hill leadership.

Develop and maintain a PR calendar including press announcements, blogs, conferences, social media etc.

Lead Internal Communications working closely with HR and other functions to align and inspire employees and create a bridge between external communications, internal communications and employment branding. Develop and maintain an internal communications calendar and expand employee channel utilization (company intranet).

Lead the planning, promotion and logistics of internal and external events including organizing and hosting tours, All Company meetings and supporting Investor Relations such as Investor Day.

Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.

Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, staff development and agency management.

Monitor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.

EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and professional development in communications, business or related field preferred

10+ years of accomplished strategic communications experience of increasing scope

Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including understanding of business priorities and translating scientific content for diverse audiences

Proven experience as a leader in communicating with and building rapport with diverse stakeholders

Experience in leading and managing teams through direct reporting and influence

Experience working proactively with media and established influential productive working relationships

Experience functioning successfully as a communications strategist and spokesperson in a nuanced and sometimes controversial environment

Fiscal accountability and budget management experience

Ability to travel up to 25% of time
